Amanzi Ethu Nobuntu Team

We were proud to be part of this pilot initiative. A project funded mainly by the Department Of Science & Innovation and managed by DUCT.

Adopt a River collaborated with Umgeni Estuary Conservancy, WESSA KZN, and Tufbag as we took on two river teams for a three-month period from February through to April 2021.

This project helped connect youth with the river environment – our teams were placed at uMngeni River and an upper catchment tributary – the Ntshununu river.

Their involvement included bio-monitoring, waste management, community engagement and river health research.

These three months were extraordinary, not only in terms of extra hands on the ground but the proof that a team’s daily presence has a significant spin-off in holding other local co-op.

We discovered that the community and municipal departments responded better knowing there were eco-warriors about.

During the course of the three months the team members also attended various courses and training modules to further their knowledge and develop new skills.

We await further news from the funders about Phase 2 and possible extension of this project.
